Welcome to Loco Mosaics. I'm Rhona Torrance and I live and work in Central Scotland, where I make mosaics for the home and garden. My introduction to the business of mosaics was a chance one. It began with a Facebook chain status of all things! My friend had posted a status message saying he promised to handmake a gift for the first three people who commented on his status. And anyone who commented also had to do the same. Soon enough I had three friends signed up so I began to think about what I could make them. I'd always loved brightly coloured mosaics and was looking at the internet when I stumbled upon 'pique assiette'.
Pique assiette (the French name literally means "stolen from plates") is a style of mosaic that incorporates pieces of broken ceramics - plates, dishes, cups, mirror and tiles - into the design. It's believed to have been originally introduced by Raymond Edouard Isadore, known as the "father of French pique assiette", who covered his entire house with mosaics of broken pottery. I was immediately hooked!
Everything happened really quickly after that. I did a mosaics course, our spare room became my studio, I raided the local charity shops for antique china, I got my hands on some tiles, beads, mirrors and tools, and I was off. I specialise in mosaics on slate tiles with brightly coloured designs for the home and garden. I love giving a new lease of life to old, forgotten slate and antique china. It brings recycling to a whole new level!
Thanks for visiting my website. Please take a look around my shop and I hope you find something you like for your house or home, or a gift for a loved one. I also do one-off commissions - if you're interested, get in touch.
I'm still waiting on that handmade present ...
